Hunting season is in full swing. This means landowners and trophy and biltong hunters should ensure they are up to date with the legal requirements for carrying ammunition and transporting meat as well as the environmental conservation regulations.
Legislation governing lawful hunting practices for professional and biltong hunters in South Africa varies between provinces and even districts. Hunters who simply follow the old maxim of ‘winter is hunting season’ may inadvertently find themselves on the wrong side of the law, facing hefty fines or even imprisonment. It is also important for hunters to familiarise themselves with firearm legislation.
Hunters should also be careful when transporting carcasses to a butcher for processing. The correct documentation must be carried, otherwise there is a risk of being arrested and charged with poaching. In addition to being fined, a hunter could have his firearms, vehicle, and everything used in contravention of the act, confiscated.
