The African continent has the agricultural potential to sustain itself and other parts of the world with food, but there are challenges lying ahead, according to speakers at the Global Forum for Innovations in Agriculture.
Hosted in Durban, the forum showcases innovations for sustainable agriculture and delegates from Rwanda‚ Somalia‚ South Africa‚ and Zambia were in attendance.
Director of the Technical Centre for Agricultural and Rural Cooperation (CTA), Michael Hailu, encouraged delegates to be positive about Africa’s agricultural sector.
“Just as African countries have leapfrogged fixed telephone lines and gone straight to mobile phones and tablets‚ so too can the continent make huge strides by taking advantage of recent advances in science‚ technology and innovations to dramatically improve agricultural productivity‚ raise incomes and create new markets for produce‚” Hailu explained.
African delegates also highlighted the fact that investments from the private sector and support from non-corrupt governments are needed for the continent’s agricultural sector to blossom.
