Disaster management structures and legislation will have to be jacked up to enable the agriculture sector to survive future disasters such as droughts or flooding. This is the opinion of Agri SA’s Commercial Policy Committee Chairperson, Harry Prinsloo. He says although there is a good working relationship and goodwill between Agri SA and Government, the problem lies with the structure and implementation of things like disaster aid.
“I think the structures cause problems. One needs to get these things in order to ensure that the right help arrives at the right place at the right time. I think that is our biggest problem.” He says plans must now be put in place to prepare for future disasters.“ Agri SA has, over many years, had a good drought plan. My personal opinion is that this now needs to be implemented because this will not be the last drought we are faced with.
