There’s only two solutions for governments to reach their global warming goals: eliminate the use of fossil fuels or find ways to undo their damage to the climate system in the future.
To eliminate the use of fossil fuels is virtually impossible as the world is still too dependent on using oil, coal and natural gas. This leaves governments with the option of having to clean up Earth’s atmosphere.
Scientists are worried about this option, as the December, 12 agreement makes no mention of this – leaving them to think that world leaders do not comprehend the goals they want to reach.
“I would say it’s the single biggest issue that has to be resolved,” Glen Peters of the Cicero climate research institute in Oslo, Norway, said.
This clean-up process would involve removing greenhouse gases at a faster pace than what humans are putting in it.
Scientists revealed that currently we’re putting in about 50 billion tons a year, which mostly consists of carbon dioxide from the burning of fossil fuels for energy.
Some scientists believe that the goals reached at the COP21 meeting are too ambitious, as this would mean putting other priorities first and in the process let global temperatures temporarily rise above 2°C, and then bring it down to 1,5°C. This is something most governments don’t want to do.
