Thousands of cattle have perished due to the drought that’s currently being experienced throughout the country.
In the North West province, thirty villagers gathered together to lead prayers for rain, hoping for some relief as temperatures reach 40°C and above.
The Molatedi Dam, the largest man-made dam in the province, is currently only 5% full and supplies water to 3.7 million people.
Animals are seen wandering around on dried, cracked earth, in search of water and grass to feed on.
Lardus van Zyl, Chairman of the Red Meat Producers Organisation, explains that farmers are auctioning, selling and butchering their livestock before it dies from thirst and hunger. Approximately a third more cattle are being butchered compared to the same time last year.
