Thailand markets have opened their ports to the South African table grape industry after eight years of unexpected closure. This shutting of the Thai market caused controversy and the South African government’s slow response to Thai officials’ requests for an updated protocol has been blamed as the cause of the closure.
Shortly after this announcement, Young Farmer of the Year (2016) finalist, Mr Jacques Beukes and his brother, Eugene, from the Modderdrift Farm in the Hex River Valley, decided to take full advantage of this opportunity and delivered 10 800 boxes of Modderdrift’s Crimson seedless red grapes to Thailand on 25 March 2015.
Jacques says is was a gamble and could have backfired but he’s glad that things worked out. “We got fantastic feedback regarding the quality of our grapes,” says Jacques. “We look forward to increase the volume that we intend to send to Thailand next year,” he added.
