During his speech at the Global Conference on Agriculture Research, Mark Holderness, executive secretary of the Global Forum on Agricultural Research, said that the agriculture sector has suffered a prolonged shortage of investment worldwide.
He mentioned that in 2008 everyone was shocked by the food price crisis and it caused the world to wake up and suddenly take note of agriculture after decades of neglect and underinvestment. Mark says agricultural research needs to focus more on the future needs of food producers and should be more involved in setting research agendas. Research has proven that local and scientific knowledge can be combined to develop new ways to farm, manage resources and add value to market products.
The GCARD3 conference started on 5 April in Ekurhuleni, near Johannesburg, and is hosted by the Agricultural Research Council. The event ends on 8 April.
