More than 350 delegates attended the 18th annual general meeting and conference of The National Emergent Red Meat Producers’ Organisation’s (NERPO). The organisation aspired to use the conference as a platform to address strategies towards the country’s agricultural transformation, land reform, and rural development.
“Literature and international experience indicate that the success of smallholder farmers can only be through co-operation. For smallholder farmers in South Africa to effectively bargain in input and output markets and own facilities in the red meat value chain, NERPO Livestock Syndicate Scheme has been put forward as the ideal model for such co-operation,” as seen in one of the key principles of NERPO.
NERPO initiated several resolutions which were unanimously adopted and will be seen as priority in coming season. More of these principles and resolutions are mentioned in the full report.
