A newly-launched research project aims to directly link resource-poor farmers with major South African supermarkets like Woolworths and Pick n Pay.
The Agricultural Research Council (ARC) and the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR) are collaborating on this initiative, which will also equip small-scale beef producers with the skills required to improve farm productivity and profitability and to supply high-quality beef.
The project can help South Africa reach the goals of the National Development Plan, argues Joel Mamabolo, registrar of animal improvement at the department of agriculture. “A key outcome of the project is developing integrated value chains and red meat is a main priority,” said Mamabolo.
