The pecan industry in South Africa is still very young and in a developing phase. The visiting farmers therefore had many questions to ask the US producers with their long history in the New Mexico pecan industry.
The Stahmann and Salopek families were two of the first families to farm pecan nuts in the area of Las Cruces and surroundings in the state of New Mexico. The state, according to the New Mexico State University, produces approximately 20% of the US pecan crop annually.
“As orchard acreage increased in New Mexico and growers learned how to obtain high pecan yields and quality under the unique southwestern soil and climate conditions, state-wide production also increased dramatically. In 2006, New Mexico became the largest pecan producing state in the nation for the first time in history.” The current largest pecan producing state in the US differs from year to year, with the states of Georgia and New Mexico mostly in the lead.
