Africa’s vast fallow lands hold great potential for future agriculture, as well as the possibility to provide in the world’s food needs.
This is according to PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) who recently released a paper on food security on the African continent.
The report stated that it’s more likely for developing countries to provide in the world’s food needs, due to them having land that is available for agricultural development. Developed countries on the other hand, have already reached their full potential, as they are using the latest technologies and improved practices.
PwC’s report also stated that Zambia has the potential to develop 57 million hectares for agriculture.
“The world needs more food. China’s growing protein needs alone will require an area the size of the United Kingdom to grow the grains to support that consumption. And as more industrialising countries lose the ability to feed themselves, the world is going to look increasingly to Africa to be the solution,” said Richard Ferguson, agricultural adviser for PwC and author of the report in a statement.
