The Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries released their Agricultural Policy Action Plan last year, and we take a look at the goals they’ve set for this sector of South Africa. Two of the primary goals highlighted in the report is that government seeks to establish decent employment through the means of inclusive growth, as well as comprehensive rural development and food security.
With agriculture being the primary economic activity in rural activities, government sees the potential to create 1 million jobs by 2030 in this sector.
“Rural communities should have greater opportunities to participate fully in the economic, social and political life of the country. People should have access to high-quality basic services that enable them to be well-nourished, healthy and increasingly skilled. Rural economies will be supported by agriculture, and were possible by mining, tourism, agro-processing and fisheries…better integration of the country’s rural areas, achieved though successful land reform, job creation and poverty alleviation.” – Agricultural Policy Action Plan
