At this year’s national RPO congress, which was held in Centurion, Koos van der Ryst, national chairman of the Red Meat Producers’ Organization, shared the organisation’s vision for a sustainable red meat industry in South Africa.
He says the vision is a competitive and sustainable red meat industry, in which producers can add and gain value.
According to Koos, it will always be a work in progress to ensure that the vision is a lasting reality. “The vision can only be achieved by improving capacity, utilisation and conservation of natural resources, proactive management of biosecurity risks and the creation of various services in the industry.
The RPO will work with various other organisations in the industry and producers to realize these goals. Producers have a responsibility carry out and complete the basics correctly, especially with biosecurity and natural resource management.
According to Koos, there are several priorities that need to be focused on in the near future. “This includes the establishment of partnerships, the creation of an empowerment environment, the development of the relevance of the RPO structure for its members, and the renewal of RPO communication at all levels.”
“Our strategic plan is based on four pillars: the policy and legislative environment, sustainable production environment, market environment and consumer environment, organisational and financial capacities and human resources.”
