The Northern Cape celebrates the opening of another solar storage plant. ENGIE, the French electric utility, has completed and begun production from one of the largest renewable energy projects in South Africa.
The 100MW Kathu Solar Park is a concentrated solar plant (CSP) with storage. They offer clean electricity and provide up to 4,5 hours of thermal energy storage. The Kathu Solar Park is expected to provide clean electricity for the equivalent of 179,000 houses, the local community of the John Toalo Gaetsewe District Municipality, the Northern Cape province, and South Africa.
This project was developed to provide a solution that is environmentally friendly and to overcome the irregularity of renewable energy sources. This project will also foster local economic development, as well as a trust for the benefit of the communities within the Northern Cape.
