A woman from Middelburg started an initiative to spread water across the country to people in desperate need of it.
Caroline van Saasen, a secretary at the Middelburg Chamber of Commerce, said she started her initiative on Sunday. Her plan is to reach out to holiday travelers to drop bottles of water in areas where it is much needed.
She recently started a Facebook group, Waternood Suid Afrika/Water shortage South Africa. A few hours later her page got responses from travelers who are willing to assist in her cause.
“I’m a member of the Boere in Nood Groep Facebook group and some people said that the water shortage has become so bad that some of their calves have died. They also asked people in what areas rain is needed, which gave me an indication of where to start,” Van Saasen explained.
Van Saasen also said that it’s not only farmers who need rain desperately, but people from informal settlements as well.
According to her Facebook page, she identified various target areas and urged travelers to contact her if they can spare some water to those in need.
